Biography of Dr. Stefan Gravenstein

Dr. Gravenstein received his Bachelor of Science from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, and his MD from Ohio State University. He completed residency training in categorical internal medicine at the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics, Madison, Wisconsin, and was associate professor of medicine (tenure) before leaving for EVMS. He received his Master of Public Health (MPH) at the Eastern Virginia Medical School and Old Dominion University in 2001, and was elected to Fellowship in American College of Physicians (FACP) in 2002 and is a Certified Medical Director through the American Medical Directors Association.

Dr. Gravenstein has broad clinical and basic research interests including in memory loss, osteoporosis, immunesenescence, vaccination, and influenza in the elderly and has published in these topics. He developed and directed Memory Assessment Clinics for the University of Wisconsin and Eastern Virginia Medical School. He is past chair of the National Institute of Aging Clinical Aging Review Committee (NIA-C) and serves as ad hoc reviewer for other NIH committees, AFAR and several journals. He is the past President of the Virginia Geriatrics Society of Virginia (5/2006-7/2006). While he was president he served on the COSAR, Education, Research and ADGAP Committees. He is still on the Research Committee.

Dr. Gravenstein’s honors include: the Associate Investigator Award, Veteran’s Administration (1987-1990), Clinical Investigator Award, NIH (1991-1997), an RO1 (1990-1998) which examined influenza epidemiology, immune senescence and antiviral use for nursing home outbreak control. He received a NIH Geriatric Leadership Award K07 (1998-2003), the Hartford Geriatrics Leadership Scholars Program Award (2001-2004) and the Association of Directors of Geriatric Academic Programs (ADGAP) Grant (2002-2005). He is a member of several societies in geriatrics, infectious disease, immunology and internal medicine. He serves as a member on the Advisory for the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) expert panel charged with the development of a clinical practice guideline for the diagnosis and management of seasonal influenza in adults and children.
